HISTORY :
Hongik University is a private university in Seoul. Founded by an activist in 1946, the university is located in Mapo-gu district of central Seoul. The educational goal of Hongik University is to forge the strongest possible link between academia and industry to provide service for the benefit of all humankind. The name “Hongik”, translated into English, literally means “service to mankind.

As of 2023, Hongik University has approximately 17,688undergraduate students and 3,617 graduate students.
University Programs:
Hongik University offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs across 17 different colleges, including the College of Fine Arts, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts, College of Architecture, College of Law, and College of Economics and Business Administration. Some of the most popular programs at Hongik University include iberal arts, engineering, fine arts and design, education.

The international student population in Hongik University reaches approximately 1,700 Approximately 200 exchange students are admitted into Hongik University per year.
Activities :
There are 66 student clubs specializing in diverse fields such as academics, sports, arts, performance, and leisure. These clubs together form a club alliance, and it operates in a well-organized way. The club activities allow students to share common interests and forge diverse human relationships. Many students participate in such club activities, and these are known to be the heart of campus life.
Since its first exhibition in 1993, the Street Art Exhibition takes place annually under the supervision of the College of Arts in order to allow the public to naturally and conveniently approach arts through a space concept of ‘street’ in front of Hongik University where culture and art coexist. The Street Art Exhibition consisting of exhibition, participatory arts, mural arts, performing arts, etc. provide diverse attractions.
Hongdae area :
The neighborhood of the Seoul campus has been renowned for Korean indie music and art culture since the 1980s. Until the 2000s, the district remained as an original indie hipster area for young adults, however, due to the incursion and expansion of corporate brands and real estate development, gentrification has become a serious issue for many years. As an outcome, the neighborhood has also expanded to adjacent areas. It is a very crowded and commercial district full of young adults mostly who would like to enjoy hip restaurants, bars, live and night clubs, and art galleries including alternative art spaces.
